year.

THE 'GHOST WORLD' TRILOGY
THE GHOST DRUM - (Winner of the Carnegie Medal, 1987).
GHOST SONG
GHOST DANCE
It's hard to set a reading age on these. They have been
enjoyed by children in the 10-12 age (and, on occasion, by children
even younger). They've also been enjoyed by teenagers and adults.

FOLKLORE RETELLINGS - Again, it's hard to set a reading age on these.
Many have been enjoyed by adults and older teenagers. Some are simple
enough to be read by 9-10 year olds. Other younger children may enjoy
listening to them read aloud.

THE KING'S HEAD - The Royal story-teller refuses to tell his King a
story the night before a battle, but promises that he will tell him a
story the following night. The story-teller is killed in the battle.
Still, he doesn't let Death stop him, and struggles to reach his King
and keep his promise. At each stage of his journey, he tells a story
to the people who help him. A collection of traditional stories, re-
told, within a frame inspired by an old Irish legend.

THE STORY COLLECTOR - An old retired gentleman, Mr. Grimsby, takes up
the hobby of collecting old stories. He meets many different people,
who each tell him a story and then, as he's walking home one night, he
meets the Ghost Dog - who tells him a story. A collection of
traditional stories, re-told.

TELLING TALES Three women, one old, one middle-aged, one young, meet
at weddings, births and funerals. They each tell a story, suitable to
the occasion. A collection of traditional stories, re-told.

HEAD AND TALES - A navvy, working in the canal-diggings, dies of
fever. His last request is that his head be cut off, and given to his
two children, to carry back to his mother on the other side of the
country. During the long journey, the head encourages, protects and
comforts the children, by telling stories. A collection of traditional
stories, re-told, within a frame.

GHOSTS AT LARGE
FORBIDDEN DOORS
THE CARPENTER AND OTHER STORIES - These last three are earlier books,
and are much simpler retellings of folk stories.

FOR THE 10-13 RANGE

FORTHCOMING BOOK FOR THIS AGE GROUP
THE GREAT ARMY - To be published next year, as part of
Usbourne's 'Warrior' series. Set in the Viking Age, it tells the story
of two Shetland boys who join 'The Great Danish Army' which invaded
England, and all but conquered it.

THE SAGA OF ASLAK - Set in the Viking Age. Aslak and his sister are
born slaves, but Aslak is freed by their father. As soon as he's old
enough, he goes Viking and become a successful trader. But he returns
from one voyage to find that his father has died, and his half-brothers
have sold his sister. He sets out for the great Viking markets of
Kaupang and Hedeby, to trace her.

OLLY SPELLMAKER AND THE SULKY SMUDGE

first book was originally published in Macmillan's 'Shock Shop' range

Russian fairy tales, that if you drink from an animal's footprint, you

out to play?'

to Earth, and runs away.

KNOCKING JACK - A poltergeist story.

ODIN'S MONSTER - I've found this hugely popular at school visits when I
read it aloud. Set in the Viking Age. An Icelandic poet refuses to
help a witch, even though the witch threatens to send a monster against
him.

A FEASTING OF TROLLS - A boy is sent away from home every Christmas, to
stay with relatives. His older brothers and sisters never come with
him. One Christmas, he sneaks back home to find out why.

However, the Vicar has reckoned without Master Thomas Katt.

born slaves, but Aslak is freed by their father. As soon as he's old

vet'. He makes it from an old fox-fur and a meat bone. But such pets
are not without problems.

IN A NUTSHELL - A story of two tiny, thumb-sized people.

THE DEVIL'S PIPER - The first book I ever wrote. Four children
squabbling by a canal bank wake an ancient spirit.
